Norwich Terriers are the smallest dogs of the Terrier group. They were originally bred for hunting and did well in packs. This partially explains their friendly personality and eagerness to be a part of a family. Norwich Terriers serve mainly as companions. However, they have retained their hunting skills and can be used as vermin killers.

Norwich Terriers - Description

The Norwich Terrier is similar in appearance to the Norfolk terrier. These breeds were earlier developed as one. With time, distinct characteristics of the dogs provided for a differentiation of the breeds. The Norwich Terrier is a sturdy dog. It has a compact body build that is slightly rounder than that of the Norfolk Terrier. The fox-like muzzle goes well with its erect ears. The tail is usually docked by half. Their strong jaws have a regular scissors bite.

Height: about 10 inches
Weight: 10-12 pounds

The Norwich Terrier has a straight wiry coat with a thick undercoat. These dogs come usually in solid red, wheaten, grizzle, and black. Although white markings are allowed, this is not desired. Grooming is relatively easy.

Norwich Terriers - Temperament

The Norwich Terrier is mostly used as a companion. Norwich Terriers are friendly with children and do well with other pets. Unlike the Norfolk Terrier, the breed is on friendly terms with canines. It appears to feel less jealousy for its owners and rarely shows dissatisfaction at the sight of the owner petting another dog.

The Norwich Terrier is said to be an intelligent breed. These dogs learn quickly, yet tend to prefer things their own way. Obedience training is highly recommended for Norwich Terriers.

Norwich Terriers - Exercise Needs

These dogs are very active and need a lot of exercise. They are sure to make a good company for joggers or people who enjoy active sports. However, do not overdo with exercise. Be careful to not let the dog off its leash in unsafe areas. Norwich Terriers are easily carried away by play.
