Norwich Terriers - Breed History

Norwich Terriers originated in Great Britain. The dog was bred in 1870 in Norfolk, the capital of Norwich. The main purpose of Norwich Terriers was hunting. Breeders crossed terrier-type dogs to produce the Norwich Terrier. The Norfolk Terrier, which is now a separate breed, took its roots in the same region. Actually, the Norfolk and the Norwich Terriers were considered two varieties of the same breed until 1964.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the number of Norwich Terriers was low. As a matter of fact, the breed almost went extinct. Happily, new breedings allowed for the restoration of the Norwich Terrier population. The outcome of Norwich Terriers was based on crossbreeding the Norwich Terrier with Bull Terrier-type dogs and, probably, the Bedlington Terrier.

The first dogs imported to the United States were often referred to as Jones Terriers. This breed name honored one of the most distinguished breeders of Norwich Terriers. Many of the present Norwich Terriers are sure to be the offspring of those dogs bred by Jones, a horseman.

The Kennel Club recognized the Norwich Terrier in 1932. The AKC separated the Norwich and the Norfolk Terrier in 1979. Nowadays, these dogs serve as companions and hunting dogs. Norwich and Norfolk Terriers are often promoted by the same clubs.
